Questions & Answers

Q: Why can't I just throw out my old Computer and components?

A: Computers, monitors and other electronic equiptment all contain metals which are toxic. If these items are palced in a landfill
the toxins could leak from them and end up in the ground contaminating our water. Computers contain lead nad other harmful
components but the picture tube from a monitor is the worst for the environment since it conatins over 3 pounds of lead alone.
Which means computers and other electronic equpitment are considered hazardous waste and are illegal to throw away under
Wisconsin state law. Please visit our Links page to view more of the rules, regulations and fines.

Q: What are the benefits of recycling my computer?

A:First off when you recycle your computer you wont have to worry about breaking any state laws or getting any fines. Secondly
it's enviromenatlly safe since you are reducing the amount of toxic materials that are put into our landfills. The materials will also
be used again after being recycled instead of just being thrown out.

Q: Why is there a cost for monitors and what is the cost?

A: Due to lead in the monitors being mixed with glass in the tube there is a lengthy process in order to be able to recycle them.
Monitors must be disassembled and all external metal removed, along with the picture tubes. The picture tubes then undergo a process of having the backs cut off, internal metal removed, and the phosphor removed by an economically safe chemical wash.
The final step is to grind up the glass and reuse it in new monitor and television tubes. The cost for this process is $10.00 a
monitor which can be found with the rest of our prices on the Price List for Accepted Items page .

Q: Why is there a cost for monitors but not a cost to recycle PCs, Keyboards, Small Printers, ECT.?

A: Due to the fact that some of the materials have a fair scrap value and PCs, Printers and other equiptment are rather easy to disassemble,
the effort put into stripping and sorting the materials is then reimberssed by what is paid when the scrap materials are sold.

Q: Why do I need the data on my hard drives or tapes destroyed and how is this process done?

A: There is so much information that is stored on your hard drive such as all of your passwords, personal information like your credit
card numbers or even your social security number. If someone were to get a hold of any of this information it would be easy to preform
identity theft and you could be out thousands of dollars. This is why most medical, financial and county businesses are required to erase
the hard drives of all computers when they recycle them. In order to do this properly we use a program which is in sccordance with US
Department of Defence 5220.22M Standard.

Q: Is there a fee for recycling only one or two computers?

A: No, we have two drop boxes that are conviently located in the Fox Valley for individuals to use. Please click on the
Drop Box Locations link to get more information. In order to help cover the costs of this service for individuals we ask
that businesses please Contact Us to set up a pick up date and time.
